Specialists in constructing and equipping environmentally controlled commercial glasshouses, Bridge Greenhouses, have won the contract to renovate a research greenhouse at Aberystwyth University.

The highly-regarded institute in Aberystwyth, Wales, were in desperate need of an upgrade on one of their Venlo research glasshouses. As well as requiring repairs to the glasshouse, the University were experiencing real problems with temperature control in the summer months, relying solely on the roof vents for cooling.

With prior experience in delivering research greenhouses for universities around the UK, Bridge Greenhouses were assigned the contract to refurbish the greenhouse, also installing all the necessary systems for controlling conditions.

“Aberystwyth University’s glasshouse facilities are a fantastic space for teaching and horticultural research. We’re delighted to be updating one of their greenhouse structures that will be better suited for carrying out controlled plant research from aspiring students!” says Jamie Adams, Director of Bridge Greenhouses.

The refurbishment will be performed on a 912m², 29 compartment Venlo glasshouse, with the now outdated systems being stripped out and replaced.

Bridge Greenhouses will install fan ventilation, vertical shade screens, irrigation system, heating and cooling system from 2no. air source heat pumps, LED grow lights & electrical works.

Bridge also plans to install a Tomtech environmental control system, enabling the university to precisely control temperature, humidity & light levels for individual and multiple crops.

“At Bridge Greenhouses, we don’t just supply and install standard greenhouses for commercial growing – our structures can be tailored for precision, enabling accurate, repeatable growing conditions. Plus, with the horticultural technology to support, our structures can maintain these laboratory-standards conditions without the need for human intervention” adds Jamie.

Founded in 1983, Bridge Greenhouses has been at the forefront of the UK horticulture for almost four decades, establishing commercial greenhouses throughout Britain for edible crops, medicinal plants, plant nurseries and flowers.

In addition to commercial sectors, Bridge has also supported universities, schools and research organisations, working with institutes such as the University of Cambridge, Merrist Wood College, Liverpool University, the John Innes Centre and more.

“It’s incredibly rewarding to support the next generation of researchers with specialist growing spaces that allow them to carry out world-class plant science. With work at Aberystwyth University now well underway and a scheduled completion date for late-October, we’re looking forward to seeing the final refurbished glasshouse begin supporting students and researchers alike!” concludes Jamie.
