The Newt – Venlo greenhouse and biomass boiler installation

Project by Bridge Greenhouses

A Venlo greenhouse, divided into three areas – greenhouse, propagation and service – was delivered and installed at The Newt country estate in Sommerset. Given the estate’s prestigious status, Bridge Greenhouses were the ideal partner for constructing a state-of-the-art glasshouse structure that could match the magnificence of their institute.

In addition to supplying a new Venlo structure, a biomass boiler was installed within the structure, enabling The Newt to efficiently generate sustainable heat for their glasshouse plants.

Area: 662 m²

Industry: Leisure & Tourism

Greenhouse Structure: Venlo greenhouse built off existing concrete wall, split into the 3 seperate zones. Galvanised steel, tempered horticultural glass, aluminium roof, gutter and gable system.

Screens: Roof shade screen and blackout screens.

Benching: 2 no. static benches and 3 no. mobile benches in propagation area.

Biomass Boiler Heating: Hargassner 300kW Magno VR wood chip boiler with 300kW Hoval LPG Ultragas condensing boiler back up. Piped hot water trolley heating system for growing propagation areas.

Ventilation: Rail mechanism to control ventilation windows in 3 greenhouse zones.

Lighting: Modular Kroptek Sunstream 250w LED growth lights installed above crop canopy/benches throughout the growing area and propagation areas, creating a light level of 200µmol/m².

Irrigitation: Hydroponic irrigation system installed within the growing area. System built from PDP101 peristaltic pumps, DXF8 diaphragm acid treatment pump and ECM2 conductivity monitor. UV steriliser also installed to treat the water returning to the tank.

Electrics and systems: Greenhouse conditions automated via a Tomtech T200 computer. 3 no. Bridge custom-built control panels for manual override of greenhouse equipment.
